Tent view

Final image for today, another grab shot with the camera phone. Final view of the first day at the beachside campsite in Wales. Taken through the mosquito net, looking out to sea. Fuzzy for two reasons - the mosquito net fooled the simple auto focus of the phone, and it was quite a noisy image, so I softened it a bit to hide it a little. I think it gives an almost dreamy quality to it, which nicely fits in with the beer and tiredness-induced sleepiness that was descending on me rapidly. We moved the air mattress into the main living area of the tent, and fell asleep with this as the view. No one on the campsite, and no one (save the fence) obstructing the view. A perfect end to a perfect day.

Sunsets

Last one from me today (and also an attempt to get away from the horsey theme).

A couple of gorgeous sunsets taken from our attic room windows from a few months back. Both use the tephoto 70-300 EF-S IS lens. The image stablisation is great on this lens, as these were taken at the long end of the range, ISO 400, with the shutter speed in the 1/15 - 1/20 range, hand-held.

I really love good sunsets, and these two have brilliant colour and - in the second image - great cloud structure too. I chose to keep the trees in there to provide a base and some anchor for the images, otherwise they become more abstract (certainly the first one would).

Sunset on Marmot Island, Gulf of Alaska

Here is another photograph that was taken while I was doing fieldwork in the Gulf of Alaska in the winter of 1996. The image was scanned at 4000 ppi. The original image was very dark so I used the shadows and highlights tool to balance the tones a little better, although it is still not perfect.

I find this image very calming and like the contrast between the rather monochrome foreground and the setting sun in the background.

Wicken Fen

Something I did a while ago; blended image, one exposed for sunset, one for foreground. Tried to achieve a natural feel, although it was a good deal darker than this. I like the square format, and the foreground detail of the part-cut grasses, leading in the eye to the windmill.
