Finally... a DSLR.... any tips guys?

At last, I got one of these:

Sony A700P

Added UV and C-PL filters... feeling like a kid on Xmas day! The functionality is great. Already getting obsessed about prime lens action...

Will be posting a lot more on Critical Light soon...

Any tips?

Here is one of the very first shots.

Best tip I can give is to experiment as much as possible with the settings (aperture, ISO, shutter speed, focus etc) and NEVER use it on manual mode - EVER!

SLRs give excellent results, but are also less forgiving than compacts - experiment to get the best results. Also, never delete an image based on the result when viewed on the camera screen (unless it's obviously terrible), as you can't really check focus etc on such a small screen.

Learn about exposure - and the camera exposure modes - as much as possible.

Use RAW, since this gives the best post-capture processing flexibility. Don't worry about space - buy big (2GB) cards as these are cheap. Buy lots of 1-2GB cards rather than massive 8GB cards, since they can get corrupted (rare) and therefore you spread the risk.

Be disciplined in how you download and archive the images - you don't want to lose an image, and you also don't want to keep all the shite that you'll also inevitably take.

Can't think of anything else right now...

I am interested to know why you bought this particular model, and what you think so far.

Congrats on the new toy!

Is that some vignetting in the corners? Maybe the filters are interfering a bit?

I meant to say NEVER use AUTO mode, not manual. ALWAYS use MANUAL. There. That's better...
