Also, I have cropped the other image to be even more letterbox - improvement or not?

#1 - great, although I'd lose the pair of figures just above the right shoulder of the "main" pair because the main pair need more space around them.
#2 yes, better crop although I still think it's all too dark...!

I much prefer the first image to the second. The second image does not work for me - I think it is the case of the people being too small.
In the first, I agree with Gareth in that the two main people need more space do deleting the couple mentioned by G would do it. The image does appear too dark to me too but has a very good feeling to it-afternoon walk on the beach with the dogs-done it so many times.
