Sunset and dune, Sable Island

Sunset and dune

This shot was taken just before the sunset exploded. It was one of the best sunsets I have seen on Sable. I will post more of it later. Here, I am looking east. There was a nice warmth coming from the dune.

The warmth of the light is great. For me, like the one below, I don't dig the compositional rule of putting the interest in the very bottom corner/edge of the image. I want to see it, not be left feeling cheated! Also, it can't be an impulse, feeling-type of image, as the composition is so similar to the one below that it must be a conscious decision to take/crop it that way, and that seems to be against the ethos of Miksang.

Oh dear, I've gone off on one again....ignore me.

OK. First, there is no compositional rule...it's what feels right at the time, what churns my gut, rather than what should be done. I don't and have never shot according to rules or 'shoulds'. Second, if two shots have similar composition then fine; it's still based upon how I felt at the time rather than thinking about where the dune or seal should be.

But we both know that we shoot very differently and as a result create very different images...

I am entering an artist competition here. Its open to recent immigrants and winners will have their work on display at a national conference on immigration and culture. Both images (dune and seal) are in the contest so I will let you know how they fare...

Must have some tea and a biscuit or two...
