Ephemeral dunes, Sable Island

I was driving toward the beach one day when on the face of a sloping dune I saw this image. It immediately stopped me. I thought twice about pulling out my camera but I am glad I did. This image never re-appeared and the two small dunes vanished soon afterwards.

Ooh, that's really rather nice. I like the sand blowing off the tip of the ridge in the top-left in particular, and it does have that "over in a second" feel to it.

It's perhaps a little contrasty, though - subjective, I know, but as you shot in RAW, could you open up the shadows just a little?

Hi Gareth,

So what do you mean exactly by "...open up the shadows just a little?". Do you mean decrease the amount of shadow, i.e. pull the shadow levels further to the right? Bring in more detail in the shadows?

Yes, I will try that. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Damian,

Sorry for the confusion - yes, that's exactly what I meant.

OK. I will take a closer look.

D,

Yes, it is nice, but a little imbalanced compositionally for me; it's all in the L-shape bottom left, with a large empty space - that my eye wanders into - top right. Very nice subtle shades and interesting shadows. Agree with G that it may be a little contrasty.

Hi,

It is interesting how our 'eyes' differ because I really like this composition. The sand blowing off the slope is blowing into the 'empty space' and that seems to appeal to me; the two dunes at the bottom provide a nice border to that.
