As Damian says "Expose to the Right..."

An interesting technical article from "The Luminous Landscape" site, which explains the why behind what Damian has stated on this blog about pushing the histogram exposure shape to the right (but not off the scale).

I checked out the reference you posted above, but it's all physics goobledegook, and (with not even a Physics O level) I don't get it. I prefer the simplistic explanation in my link....anyway, what's a marine biologist doing on physics websites? Wrong, just wrong!!

I have a friend who is an engineer and he directed me to this website after a brief online discussion about how cameras 'read' light. It sort of sparked a deeper interest in CMOS sensors...by the way, I got an E in my Physics A level...I was very proud...
