Halifax, Canada - Skyline at Night

I have recently (the past week) been taking loads of shots of Halifax for a local company who wants some pictures on their bare walls. Several blogs will appear in the next few days of this work but here is one shot that I took last night, or rather early this morning (about 1am). I am shooting from across the estuary on the adjacent town of Dartmouth. The night was incredible; very still and for Halifax quite warm (about -2c). This was taken at f9.0 for 30 seconds at 100mm. I have never done this type of work before so I would much appreciate some critical thoughts. Damian on assignment in Halifax.

Excellent shot - when I saw this, I immediately thought it was like something you'd see in tourism literature. Really nicely done, and perfect exposure. I may crop it a bit more at the bottom, but not sure without actually trying it. Love the symmetry and reflections. Did you use the in camera meter? I did for my long exposures and, with a bit of experimentation, found it really good. I assume you used a tripod? How did you get work for this company - sounds interesting!

Ivan,

Thanks a lot. That gives me some confidence. I actually shot quite a few pics and they are all pretty interesting. I worked out the exposure over several visits to the site. In fact, on many of the shots the camera was bang on and I didn't have to adjust the exposure at all. In most cases, I did find that shooting for less than 30 secs greatly reduced the colour so in the end I always used a 30 second exposure.

I did use a tripod; my most trusting Manfrotto. In some other shots, which I will post later on, I actually attached the camera to the bottom of the tripod so that the camera was as close to the surface of the water as possible. I also tried putting the tripod into the water to get even further down.

I have done three visits to shoot these pictures. The first was just a test - where to shoot from, what to shoot, exposure. The second was to capture the sunset and dusk (530-730pm) and the third was last night (10pm to 100am). On the first two visits I was absolutely freezing but last night was just glorious...
