I see what you are getting at with this quick and dirty clone/crop.

For me, it's a little too close, since I like the height of the pillar framing him in the original, as it also puts more of the environment in perspective.

I'll give it a go over the weekend...I'm usually pretty good with the old clone tool.

You're right - a taller portrait crop would also give more recognisable identity to the front of St Mark's. I really look forward to seeing what you come up with after some work in the digital darkroom, because I think it's an excellent image as it stands, and definitely possible to make into an outstanding one with a little work.
