Sable Island south beach

Hi,

Here is a vertical shot from Sable Island, south beach. The photos feels quite atmospheric to me and I like the different layers: overcast sky, cloudy sky, sea and beach.

1/125 sec at f5.6 Focal length 38mm ISO 100 RAW Adobe RGB Shot late afternoon

Comments welcome. Damian

I quite like it too, but it's not one of my favourites; it's a nice abstract image, due to the cropping, but there's something missing for me - not sure what, but I'll think about that some more...I think it may be the central placement of the horizon, makes the picture lack tension, a bit like your comment about my central placement of Spirit Island (Mr Pot...)! Too much beach too, and that's the bit with the least interest for me.

Nice colours and well exposed. The sea colour looks tinkered with - was it?

Actually, on further reflection, I like this more and more. There's a peace in it that is quite powerful (if that can be) and I can see that I'd enjoy looking at this more and more.

Hi Ivan,

Your comments are interesting because you seem to have gone through a similar process to me. I am on my second or third round of going through Sable images from 2006 (no need to even look at 2007 yet) and at first sight this image made me look but not quite enough so I bypassed it. On this round though it has captured me again and has held me. It does have a peaceful quality to it.

There is a lot of beach but the ripples of the back surf keep my eye interested and there is nice reflected light too.

The colour of the sea was not tampered with. I often find people at the market comment on the colour of the sea in my photos.

So I think this photo will make it on to my stall.

By the way, who is Mr Pot? Bit lost there...

Ah, you are losing your British-ness, by not recognising our local expressions. You remember the expression "The Pot calling the Kettle Black"? Means someone who comments (negatively) about something that they themselves do. So it was with the criticism that my Spirit Island was too central, but your horizon was central too! Therefore, if I am Mr Kettle, you are Mr Pot!

I really do like your image more and more, and agree that the subtle ripples of the waves and backwash just hold the interest in a very subtle way. I'm not sure if this would sell, but it's a great image.

Wow. I have never heard of Mr Pot and Mr Kettle? Is this a significant part of my childhood that I missed?

There's no actual Mr Pot or Mr Kettle - I was adapting the well known saying (above) for humo(u)r value. Clearly, you've been over there too long.... ;-)

I'd be interested in your comments on my recent postings too.
