Any better...?
Colin made the good point that the wide angle effect made the foreground look a bit odd. I agree, and have cropped it again to try to reduce this effect.
I like it better this way, the square crop is very good. The tree looks actually less lonely, but it does not really matters.
For the loneliness feeling, the only hint is to take some distance from the subject an shot with a teleobjectif rather than stay close to the subject and shot with a wide lens.

Yeh, I think that helps a lot. Unfortunately the tree doesn't look so lonely now. You can't win! :)
This does work much better. I do miss the yellow/green hues in the ferns though. Can that be kept...?
