Sable beach at dusk

I took this shot on Sable island on 11 January 2007 at 18:10, so quite late. It was shot on a tripod at 30 seconds, f9.0, ISO 100 with my 17-85mm lens set at 35mm. I selectively sharpened the sand in the foreground and left the remaining photo untouched. I really like the colours in this photo. The browns in the sand, the greens in the sea and the blurred surf zone. Damian

Yes, very nice! I like the bands of colour. Have you thought of trying to stretch out the contrast in the clouds? (I get the feeling I'm all into contrast today) The sky just seems less interesting than the rest of the image to me, and it takes up a good chunk of real estate.

I like this too.

I like the diagonal triangular shapes made by the horizon, surf and beachline. It has a nice soft pastel palette, adding to the dreamy milkiness of the sea. I like the beach and the tones in that section, which also hold my interest.

Like Colin, I think the top needs pulling in a bit, darkening down just a touch and getting a tad more contrast in there; it is so light on top, relative to the beach, that the image kind of leaks out the top, with not enough of a hold to retain the eye in the image. A subtle gradient would do that I think, and not mess with the overall softness.

I'd like to see this in mono too, as I am in definitely "monophillic" these days..

A great picture though.
